Live Piano, Live Pianist and The Varnish- Live Room!! : )

The Varnish is in downtown Los Angeles. It’s cool, vibey, yet dark;raw yet sophisticated!image

I’ve been playing the piano there solo just about every Tuesday night from 8:30 to 12:30 for the past 3 years.

I love the gig.

It’s git an interesting restriction. No pop tunes.

Actually, I can only play jazz tunes, standards, 20s, 30s….

Ok, I can get away with Take 5
and any Frank Sinatra but its got to fit the vibe of the room.

It’s basically a speak easy. : )

Incidentally, if you are looking for a sign there is Npne. You enter Cole’s diner and walk to the back. A door there has a cocktail glass on it and you push it open….

Anyway…

About 6 months ago we started to do a trio once a month.

That’s been amazing!

We play jazz, the real deal. Just full on creative, have fun jazz! : )

There have been some great players playing in there with me on any given trio night.

Bob Sullivan on drums and Albie Berk, this week a treat- Harold Quay is dusting the skins, people!

Roman Sirwinski has been holding down the bass chair for the most part.

If you can make it down to hang with us rest assured that we will be having a blast playing the most creativily free Jazz. Whooo hoooo! : )

Come on down, bring a friend.

I like this gig because it’s it’s outside in front of a Starbucks and there’s a bunch of families hanging out and kids playing in a fountain right in front of me. : )

Perfect Piano Music, Perfect Wedding! : )

image

What a beautiful evening for all. I had such a great time. Some very unique aspects to a perfect wedding and my piano music.

First off, I had met the bride and groom Amiee and Chris when they posted an ad of craigslist I contacted them and they ended up coming in to hear me play live at the Left Coast Wine Bar where I’m a regular entertainer on Friday evenings.

They had asked me if I could play You and I – Michael Buble/Stevie Wonder. I honestly “hacked” my way through it at that time  as I was just winging it with a chord chart  version I found on the internet with  my ipad. But I guess it was good enough to become good friends with them and  we eventually sealed the deal so to speak and made arrangements to hire me to make the perfect wedding music for them on their big day. : )

They ended up having me to play solo piano music for the cocktail  reception and wanted my trio and my self to make perfect music for the diner and first dance etc…

One extremely beautiful part of the whole evening was right after the first dance, Amiee had met with me earlier in my studio in…Studio City and we had worked out a beautiful surprise of her singing  ”That’s All” to Chris.

I must say that when she sang that song there was hardly a dry eye in the house. : )

Everything came off with out a hitch and Amiee and Chris told me over and over how many of their guest had commented on how awesome the music was. For me it was just a great honor to be asked to be part of their day and help them make it perfect!
